55th Infantry, First State Color. The 55th regiment was recruited under the authority of Colonel Richard White during the summer and fall of 1861. It was composed of men from Cambria, Berks, Bedford, Schuylkill, Indiana, Dauphin, and Blair counties. The regiment received their first state color from Governor Curtin on November 18, 1861 in a ceremony held at the rear of the old Hill's Capitol. Color-Sergeant James Miller served as color-bearer until dying of disease in South Carolina. Most of the men re-enlisted in 1864, and the regiment was mustered out of service on August 30, 1865. Color-Sergeant Michael Murray, Color-Sergeant Augustin Flanigan were also wounded while carrying the flag, finally being carried by Sergeant Hezekiah Hammer. Adjutant James H. Miller brought the flag back to Harrisburg on December 23, 1864 with hundreds of bullet holes and bloodstains of its bearers.

It was composed of men from Cambria, Berks, Bedford, Schuylkill, Indiana, Dauphin, and Blair counties. The regiment received a second state color late in 1864. The 55th was mustered out of service on August 30, 1865.
